Founding officers of Adelphi Pool. Left to right: Sal Canova, John Rice, Herb Hedin, Link Hanson, Charles Saylor, Mark Leonard, Julie Nisonger, Claire Croft. The Adelphi Swimming Pool opened in the spring of 1957. Thus, 2006 marks the 50th year of continuous operation. The ARI History Project was launched by late ARI President Jim Luhr in the Spring, 2006 to commemorate the pool's 50th Anniversary. On July 3-4, 2006, the pool sponsored a Homecoming Celebration for the 50th Anniversary. Much valuable information was undoubtedly lost in the bathhouse fire of 2000. An important source of images and information about the early years of the pool, however, was a leather-bound scrapbook with a hand-tooled “Adelphi Pool” and an image of a swordfish on the front. Treasurer JoLynn Felts found this in the bottom of a file of treasurer’s materials that she had inherited from previous Treasurer Elaine Chabot. Some persons went to a lot of trouble to document the founding of the pool, and particularly the swim teams for 1962 through 1964. Otherwise, we sought to identify as many past officers as possible, to ask for their help. As you might expect, there are many more blank spaces than names. If you can help correct errors or fill in any blanks, please let us know. Past presidents we could find, in particular, were asked to write a recollection of their time in office, with photos if possible. Anyone else who feels so moved is welcome to have his or her say too. Please send any recollections and images, and they will be added to the history. We hope that this history will continue to grow through the season and beyond. Part I: 1957, Founding of Pool Part II: 1962 - 1964 Swim Teams Part III: The Missing History, 1965 - 1989. Part IV: Toward a New Century, 1990 - 1999. Part V: Rebuilding after the Fire, 2000 - 2006.
